There is a massive amount of information on the Internet regarding our right to bear arms, the Second Amendment, President Obama, and so on. These conversations are politically and emotionally charged because they strike at the heart of what makes the United States what it is — a free country. Gun ownership is nearly a religion with many folks and then there is the other side that promotes restriction or elimination of gun rights. For whatever it is worth, the only way the United States can revoke the Second Amendment is by changing the constitution. Amendments to the Constitution can be changed, just like anything else in the Constitution, however, it takes a new Amendment to change or eliminate an old one. Thankfully, this has only happened twice in the past when alcohol prohibition was created and then repealed.
Amendments to the Constitution are extraordinary. It’s only happened 17 times since the Bill of Rights (First Ten Amendments). It would be especially hard to get an amendment through that changes the Bill of Rights, which includes the Second Amendment. Do you think the Second Amendment is going to be repealed? If that happens we won’t have to worry about helping anyone with a gun safe. If it does happen we have bigger worries than what to do about gun safes.
The other thing that can happen is that interpretation of an Amendment can change with each Supreme Court. Decades ago, the Supreme Court gave a very narrow interpretation of the Second Amendment, allowing virtually any gun control laws. A few months ago, the Court reversed directions and offered a much broader view, throwing out the Washington DC gun control laws. It’s unclear what will happen going forward, but it seems unlikely this new precedent will change any time soon, regardless of potential changes in the Court in the near future.
As much as we can tell, your guns will be safe for quite some time to come. I am sure there are a lot of people who are hoping the Second Amendment is strengthened sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, we certainly support keeping your guns away from those who would rather steal them and use them for purposes other than which they are made.
